Why Your Ductless Heating System Is Not Heating
Dec 27, 2021One of the main reasons that people install ductless heating systems in their homes is because of their ability to switch between heating and cooling modes. However, this opens up the possibility of an additional problem with ductless mini splits: getting stuck in one mode. If your ductless heating system seems stuck in air conditioning mode this winter, read on to find out why.
The Reversing Valve
A ductless heating system moves preexisting heat from one place to another by evaporating and condensing refrigerant, much like an air conditioner. Unlike an air conditioner, though, a ductless heating system can reverse the direction that refrigerant flows through its system. This is what allows it to provide either heating or air conditioning. The part that enables the system to do this is called the reversing valve. If the valve becomes lodged in one position, either because the slide becomes stuck or the solenoid controlling it malfunctions, the system will be unable to switch modes. This is the most common reason why your ductless heating system may become stuck in one mode.
Refrigerant Leaks
Refrigerant is the lifeblood of the ductless heating system, endlessly recycled through the unit throughout its operation. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will drain the system of the fluid that it needs to transfer heat properly. If your ductless heating system is experiencing a steady decline in heat output, it is quite possible that you have a refrigerant leak somewhere in your system. You should call for repairs as soon as possible, if you notice any sort of fluid leaking from your system. Otherwise, the refrigerant drain could eventually cause a full system breakdown.
