If Your Heat Pump Meets These Criteria, Replace It
Dec 27, 2021There are a lot of different steps you can take to prepare your home for the hottest months of the year. For a lot of people, scheduling preventive maintenance for their climate control systems is enough to make sure they’re ready for the coming heat. Sooner or later, however, everyone needs to replace their system with a new one. If you’re using a heat pump to stay cool this year, you should evaluate it at some point to make sure that it’s able to keep you cool through another season. If not, you should replace it now so it doesn’t break down on you in the middle of a heat wave. Have a look at some of the ways you can tell that your heat pump needs to be replaced.
High Monthly Costs
You should always keep an eye on your monthly operating costs for your heat pump, just to make sure you’re being charged properly. If your monthly bills start to creep upwards for no apparent reason, it might be a sign that your heat pump is nearing the end of its lifespan. Older heat pumps have far more wear and tear on their various parts than younger systems. This eventually starts to negatively impact their efficiency, forcing them to operate for a longer period of time in order to compensate. This longer operating time contributes to higher monthly bills.
Constant Breakdowns
It’s not unusual to need to repair your heat pump every once in a while. Things break down sometimes, whether due to normal wear or some sort of random unlucky occurrence. However, you really shouldn’t need to repair your heat pump more than once every handful of years. If your system is constantly breaking down, either every year or multiple times a year, it’s a pretty good sign that you need to replace it. That frequency of problems developing usually happens as a result of the heat pump being so worn down that parts of it begin to fail in groups. You can continue replacing the system one part at a time, if you want. But it would cost you far less in the long run to just install an entirely new system.
Older Than 10-15 Years
Assuming you are careful about scheduling regular maintenance and prompt repairs, you can expect your heat pump to last right around 10–15 years. Once the system gets older than that, it will very often start to develop problems like those we discussed above. As the issues on the system mount over time, it will become more and more costly to keep up and running. This will quickly become more expensive than simply replacing the entire system.
If your heat pump is older than 15 years, you should consult with a professional about whether or not it’s a good idea to replace it with a new one. Very often, you’ll be better off installing an entirely new system even if you might be able to get a couple more years of use out of your current one.
